(Post 13) Music Video or Short Film?!

For our A2 coursework portfolio we chose to create a music video, rather than a short film. After watching many music videos as well as researching and watching some short films, we decided that based on our interests, our knowledge of filming and editing and our time management, making a music video would be best for our group. For our practice task we created a music video purely based on performance which was very interesting and different to what we used to do and we would like to explore this further in our coursework. Making a music video gives us the opportunity to combine the creativity of creating a storyline and the technical knowledge of using film and music in one media. If we would have chosen to make a short film, our ideas would be based on the storyline, however with a music video we can combine the storyline with a lyrical text and give the audience a more cinematic feel by using supporting music. Music videos are often much shorter than short films, which means that we have to get a lot of footage into just a few minutes. This however is a good thing, as I like to use only seconds of a scene and edit them all together to get a more dynamic feel. I can imagine that filming a short film relies much more on longer takes because they need less dynamic and concentrate more on the audience’s understanding of the story.
