(Post 9) I've watched a new film
I watched The Riot Club, which was based on the Bullingdon
Club, an exclusive and elitist all male club made up of the richest and most
well connected students at Oxford. The
Riot Club is an elaborate and exaggerated depiction of the events of the
Bullingdon club, which shows the members a really bad light. The members are pompous,
entitled, glutinous, snobbish, sexist and ultimately aggressive. It’s a simple
plot line that shows members being chosen and then goes on to show them getting
out of hand during a pre-planned evening meal. The night ends with them causing
GBH to the pub landlord where they are eating. It then shows how the group are
willing to sacrifice one of their members in order to protect themselves. The
film shows the arrogance of the wealthy establishment and the cracks that
appear in their loyalty when their futures are threatened by the consequences
of their actions.
I liked watching the film because I feel like it gave me a
glimpse of a world that I don’t belong in (nor would I want to). It seemed
realistic and showed something that could be viewed as quite glamorous, as
actually quite horrible. I didn’t like the violence in the film, although the
contrast between the affluent setting of an Oxford college and the violent
scenes was very effective. The movie had a different nature to our initial idea
for a music video and therefore there is little I could take from it for our
own work. However I really like how much attention to detail had been paid throughout
the film, from the costumes to the settings, which I think played a big role in
making the whole movie so successful. This is a key element which we need to ensure
we also achieve in our music video.
